Keyhole knee surgery
What is knee arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy uses a small camera and fine instruments passed through small incisions around the knee. The camera allows the surgeon to see structures inside the joint and, when needed, treat the problem during the same operation.
Modern examination and imaging can diagnose many knee problems without surgery. Arthroscopy is therefore used when there is a specific reason to operate, rather than simply to look inside the knee.
-
01
Pain after twisting or injury
Pain that started after a sports injury, pivot or sudden twist may come from the meniscus, ligament or cartilage.
-
02
Swelling
Repeated swelling after activity or after an injury can suggest damage inside the joint.
-
03
Catching or locking
A knee that catches, locks or cannot straighten normally should be assessed, particularly after an injury.
-
04
Giving way
Repeated instability or a feeling that the knee gives way can occur with ligament injury.
-
05
Persistent symptoms
Pain or mechanical symptoms that continue despite appropriate rehabilitation may need further assessment.
Assessment
How the cause of knee symptoms is assessed
-
01
History and examination
Dr. Aniket Patil will ask how the problem started and examine movement, swelling, tenderness and knee stability.
-
02
Review existing imaging
Bring recent X-rays, MRI scans or reports if you already have them.
-
03
Additional imaging if needed
After examination, Dr. Aniket Patil can advise whether new X-rays, MRI or another investigation is useful.
-
04
Decide whether surgery has a role
The decision is based on the diagnosis, symptoms, examination, activity requirements and treatment already tried.
Treatment
Arthroscopy is not the right treatment for every knee problem
Many knee problems are treated without surgery.
Physiotherapy, activity modification, medicines or other non-surgical treatment may be appropriate depending on the diagnosis.
The treatment plan is based on the diagnosis, symptoms and how the knee is affecting daily activity or sport.
During surgery
What can be treated arthroscopically?
-
Meniscus treatment
A torn meniscus may be repaired where the tear has a reasonable chance of healing, or unstable damaged tissue may be trimmed when repair is not suitable.
Meniscus tear treatment -
ACL reconstruction
ACL reconstruction is commonly performed with arthroscopic assistance when an unstable ACL-deficient knee requires surgery.
ACL reconstruction -
Selected cartilage or loose-body problems
Arthroscopy may also be used for selected focal cartilage problems or loose fragments inside the knee.
After arthroscopy
Recovery is based on what was done inside the knee
There is no single recovery timeline for knee arthroscopy. A simple arthroscopic procedure, meniscus repair and ACL reconstruction place very different demands on the knee.
-
01
Protect the operated tissue
-
02
Restore knee movement
-
03
Rebuild strength
-
04
Progress walking, work and sport in stages
Follow the rehabilitation plan for your own operation rather than another patient’s timeline.

Knee arthroscopy: common questions
Knee arthroscopy is used to treat selected problems inside the knee, including some meniscus tears, ligament injuries, loose fragments and focal cartilage problems. The reason for surgery should be clear from the symptoms, examination and imaging.
Knee arthroscopy is not routinely recommended when osteoarthritis itself is the main cause of symptoms. It may still have a role when a separate treatable problem is present, such as a symptomatic meniscus tear or loose body.
No, knee arthroscopy is not the same as knee replacement. Knee arthroscopy uses small incisions and works inside the existing joint. Knee replacement resurfaces damaged parts of the joint with implants and is used for a different clinical problem.
You do not always need an MRI before knee arthroscopy. Bring any recent X-rays or MRI scans you already have. After examining the knee, Dr. Aniket Patil can advise whether additional imaging is needed.
Recovery varies according to the procedure performed. Meniscus repair, meniscus trimming and ligament reconstruction have different rehabilitation requirements, so the plan should follow the actual operation.
Many health insurance policies cover knee arthroscopy when medically necessary, subject to policy conditions, hospital network rules and authorisation requirements.
