ACL Reconstruction in Pune

An ACL tear can make the knee unstable during pivoting, running, jumping and direction changes.

Not every ACL tear needs surgery. Dr. Aniket Patil assesses knee stability, activity requirements and associated meniscus or cartilage injuries before discussing reconstruction.

ACL injury

What happens when the ACL tears?

The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the main stabilising ligaments inside the knee. It helps control forward movement and rotation.

ACL injuries often occur during sudden direction changes, awkward landings or contact injuries.

Some patients notice a pop, swelling and difficulty continuing the activity. Later, the main problem may be repeated giving way.

Assessment

An ACL tear is assessed clinically, not from the MRI alone

  1. 01

    Understand the injury

  2. 02

    Examine knee stability and movement

  3. 03

    Review imaging

  4. 04

Look for meniscus or cartilage injury

The decision about surgery is based on instability, activity requirements, associated injuries and how the knee responds to rehabilitation.

Treatment choices

Does every ACL tear need reconstruction?

No, some people can regain good function with structured rehabilitation, particularly when the knee remains stable during the activities they need to do.

Reconstruction is more likely to be considered when the knee repeatedly gives way, when the person wants to return to pivoting or cutting sports, or when other important structures are also injured.

Before surgery

A quiet, mobile knee is a better starting point

When ACL reconstruction is planned, rehabilitation before surgery may be used to reduce swelling, restore knee movement and improve muscle control.

The timing of surgery should account for the condition of the knee and any associated meniscus, cartilage or ligament injury.

ACL reconstruction

How the ligament is reconstructed

ACL reconstruction replaces the torn ligament with graft tissue positioned through bone tunnels in the thigh bone and shin bone.

Graft options may include tissue from the hamstring, patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon. The graft choice is discussed according to the individual knee, activity requirements and other clinical factors.

The operation is commonly performed with arthroscopic assistance so the inside of the knee and associated injuries can also be assessed.

Rehabilitation

ACL recovery is a progression, not a deadline

  1. 01

    Control swelling and restore movement

  2. 02

    Rebuild strength

  3. 03

    Develop balance and knee control

  4. 04

    Progress running and higher-demand exercise

  5. 05

Complete functional testing before unrestricted sport

Return to sport should be based on healing, strength, control and functional testing rather than a calendar date alone.

ACL reconstruction: common questions

No, not every ACL tear needs reconstruction. Some people can function well with rehabilitation alone. Reconstruction is more often considered when the knee remains unstable, higher-demand activity is important or associated injuries also need treatment.

ACL reconstruction uses graft tissue. Common autograft options include hamstring, patellar tendon and quadriceps tendon tissue.

MRI is commonly useful for confirming associated meniscus, cartilage or ligament injuries, although the clinical examination is also important in diagnosing ACL instability.

Yes, if a meniscus injury also needs surgery, it can often be treated during the same operation as ACL reconstruction.

Return to sport should follow staged rehabilitation and functional assessment. Knee strength, control, confidence and graft healing matter more than reaching a particular calendar date.

Many health insurance policies cover ACL reconstruction when medically necessary, subject to policy conditions, hospital network rules and authorisation requirements.
