Knee replacement treatments

Knee replacement may involve part of the joint, the whole knee, both knees, or revision of a previous replacement.

The right operation depends on where the damage is, how much of the knee is affected and your individual needs.

Total knee replacement

Replaces the damaged surfaces of the knee when arthritis affects enough of the joint that joint-preserving treatment is no longer suitable.

Other knee replacement treatments

  • Partial knee replacement

Replaces only the damaged compartment of the knee when arthritis is limited to a suitable part of the joint.

  • Bilateral knee replacement

Treatment planning for patients who have significant arthritis in both knees and are considering whether both should be replaced together or separately.

  • Revision knee replacement

Surgery used when a previous knee replacement develops a problem and part or all of the existing replacement needs to be assessed, removed or reconstructed.

Sports-knee treatments

Some knee problems are caused by ligament or meniscus injuries rather than arthritis.

These operations aim to address a specific injury while preserving as much of the natural knee as possible.

ACL reconstruction

Uses graft tissue to reconstruct a torn ACL when the knee remains too unstable for the activities a patient needs to return to.

Knee arthroscopy

Hip replacement treatments

Hip replacement may be considered when arthritis, avascular necrosis or another hip problem causes enough pain and loss of function that replacing the joint becomes a reasonable option.

Other hip replacement treatments

  • Direct anterior hip replacement

A surgical approach to total hip replacement in which the hip is reached from the front of the joint.

Whether it is suitable depends on the patient, anatomy and planned operation.

  • Revision hip replacement

Surgery used when an existing hip replacement develops a problem and one or more components need to be assessed, removed or reconstructed.
