Robotic knee replacement surgeon in Pune

Dr. Aniket Patil · Knee & hip replacement surgeon

Dr. Aniket Patil performs robotic-assisted knee replacement in Pune. The technology helps him plan implant position and knee balance around each patient’s anatomy, then carry out that plan with greater precision.

Consultations are at Om Hip & Knee Specialty Clinic in Kharadi, Pune.

Understanding the technology

What does robotic knee replacement mean?

It does not mean a robot operates on you. Robotic knee replacement means the surgeon uses a robotic system to map the knee, plan the replacement and guide parts of the operation more precisely.

Where robotics helps

The system gives the surgeon a detailed view of the knee’s anatomy and alignment. It can help plan implant position, assess joint balance and guide bone preparation so the operation follows the plan more closely.

The surgeon is still in control

The surgeon decides whether you need knee replacement, chooses the plan, controls the instruments and makes every important decision during the operation. The robot does not operate on its own.

During the operation

How does robotic-assisted knee replacement work?

Different robotic systems work in slightly different ways, but most follow the same basic idea: understand the knee, build a surgical plan, carry it out accurately and check the result before finishing.

  1. 01Map the knee

    The system maps your knee

The robotic system records the shape, position and alignment of the knee. Some systems use scans taken before surgery; others build the model in the operating theatre.

  2. 02Build the plan

    The surgeon builds the plan

Using this model, the surgeon plans how much bone needs to be prepared and where the knee implants should sit. The plan can be adjusted to the individual knee rather than relying only on standard measurements.

  3. 03Check the balance

    The knee’s balance is checked

The system can show how the knee lines up and how the joint spaces change as it bends and straightens. This helps the surgeon judge implant position and soft-tissue balance before completing the bone preparation.

  4. 04Prepare the bone

    The surgeon prepares the bone

The robotic system helps the surgeon carry out the planned bone preparation accurately. The surgeon controls the instrument throughout.

  5. 05Verify the result

The result is checked before finishing

Before completing the replacement, the surgeon can check the alignment, implant position and knee balance against the plan and make adjustments if needed.

The system Dr. Aniket Patil currently uses

At Noble Hospitals & Research Centre, Dr. Aniket Patil currently uses the Smith+Nephew CORI Surgical System. CORI is a handheld, imageless system that builds the knee model during surgery, so a separate CT scan is not normally needed just for robotic planning.

The robotic platform may differ at other hospitals; the surgical principles remain the same.

What robotics can add

What are the benefits of robotic knee replacement?

Robotic assistance gives the surgeon more control over planning and execution. Its clearest advantage is precision: research consistently shows more accurate alignment and fewer cases that fall outside the planned target compared with conventional instruments.

Where robotics makes a difference

  1. 01

More accurate bone preparation and implant positioning

Robotic guidance helps the surgeon reproduce the surgical plan more consistently. Studies show better alignment accuracy and fewer outliers compared with conventional knee replacement instruments.

  2. 02

A plan built around your knee

The surgeon can plan the replacement using detailed information about your anatomy rather than working only from standard landmarks and instruments. Implant position and alignment can be adjusted to suit the individual knee.

  3. 03

    Better information about knee balance

Robotic systems can show how the knee is aligned and how the joint spaces behave as the knee moves. This gives the surgeon useful information when balancing the knee and positioning the implants.

  4. 04

    Check and adjust before finishing

The surgeon can compare the result with the plan during the operation. If the alignment or balance is not where it should be, adjustments can be made before the replacement is completed.

What about pain and recovery?

Some studies have found less early pain, lower blood loss or a shorter hospital stay after robotic knee replacement. These benefits are not seen in every study or every patient, so they should be viewed as possible advantages rather than guarantees.

What robotics does not guarantee

Robotic surgery improves the precision of the operation, but precision is only one part of a successful knee replacement. It cannot guarantee a pain-free knee, a faster recovery or a longer-lasting implant. Your result also depends on the condition of the knee, the operation itself, rehabilitation and your general health.

Long-term studies have not yet shown that robotic knee replacement is superior for every patient.

Is robotics right for you?

Is robotic assistance right for your knee?

Robotic surgery only matters if knee replacement itself is the right treatment. Dr. Aniket Patil first assesses whether you need a replacement; if you do, he can then discuss whether robotic assistance makes sense for your knee and the operation required.

  • Your doctor recommends knee replacement

You want to know whether you really need knee replacement and whether robotic surgery would offer an advantage in your case.

  • You want another opinion before surgery

A second opinion can confirm whether knee replacement is the right next step and help you understand whether robotic surgery changes anything important for your case.

  • An earlier knee replacement is causing problems

If an earlier knee replacement is painful, loose, worn or infected, the first step is to find out why. Some revision operations may use robotic assistance, but that is decided by the cause of the problem and the surgery required.

Why specialist experience matters

Robotic surgery is only as good as the decisions behind it

A robot can help a surgeon carry out a plan precisely. It cannot decide whether the plan is right. The surgeon still has to understand the pattern of arthritis, choose the alignment and implant position, balance the knee and respond to what is found during surgery.

Dr. Aniket Patil is a consultant robotic joint replacement surgeon at Noble Hospitals & Research Centre in Pune. His practice includes primary and revision knee replacement as well as second opinions before surgery.

He has 20+ years of clinical and surgical experience and has performed 3,000+ joint replacement surgeries. He trained in joint replacement at Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden and in arthroscopic surgery at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.

Planning ahead

Cost, recovery and second opinions

Robotics is only one part of planning knee replacement. Cost, recovery and whether you need another opinion are usually just as important before you decide on surgery.
